September 26, 2108: Bryce Canyon

Day 19 | 30 Days of Writing

Zeke was all about the walk around the campgrounds,
but not so keen about posing for a picture

Our trip odometer has now surpassed 1,750 miles and we've been in 7 states (Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Utah). All over a span of 5 days.

We are currently cozied in at Ruby's Inn in Bryce Canyon, Utah. Zeke is noisily chewing a bone, Larry is sound asleep, and Garrett and I are on dueling computers. Our dinner was a down-home buffet, cowboy-style, straight from Ruby's Cowboy Room. That was enough for Larry. He is down for the count. As for Zeke, now that's a different story.

Garrett took him for a walk before we went to dinner. And although a long drive today to get here, he had a walk when we woke up and a lot of stops on the way. But having a puppy is like having a toddler. Boundless energy. I decided to check out Ruby's immense grounds with the pup after dinner. The video below was how our walk started. About a half a mile later we made it to the teepee we eyed across the lake. Pup wasn't too thrilled to pose for a picture. He was much more interested in the birds flying in the nearby brush.

Our drive out of Telluride this morning was a great last glimpse of the majestic orange Aspens (or Quakies, as Larry calls them). Next breakfast was served by Patsy from her cafe in Dolores, Colorado. It was delicious and reminded me of the Mom's Kitchen days in Remsen. Always a filled cup of hot coffee and sausage patties that were clearly formed by hand and not out of a Jimmy Dean box.

A few hours later, we noticed the stark change of scenery. Nearing Bryce Canyon, the landscape changed to red rock formations called hoodoos. These rock forms spark the imagination with their odd shapes and interesting lines, likely caused by years of wind and erosion. Tomorrow we'll spend our morning checking out the canyon in more detail. The ride in this afternoon was a great teaser.

Our traveling band of four are getting into our rhythm of musical hotels, extra pit stops, and long drives with varying ages and attention spans (that is directed to Zeke, not Larry). Our designated driver of all 1,750 of miles did get a little irked at his back seat and passenger drivers today. But as Larry so eloquently stated, "There, we got our one fight out of the way. Now let's have fun."

So that's exactly what we've done and we have stopped giving Garrett advice on his driving. Collectively this has seemed to do the trick for road trip unity. Basically give the driver some slack and don't sweat the small stuff.

Zeke did humor me later by not complying with my desire to take a selfie with him at the noted teepee above. If anyone was watching us from their campground tent, I am sure they were entertained. My noncompliant dog literally hid his head behind mine before finally giving me one quick picture.

Travel day success.
