September 22, 2018: Santa Fe or Bust

Day 15 | 30 Days of Writing

And we're off!
6:50 am this morning, we pulled out of the driveway to start our (hope-to-be) epic road trip. Our goal was a 6:00 am departure (sorry, Garrett), but there are a lot of things to pack and consider before leaving for a two week absence. And puppy is still a baby and requires a little more packing and tender-loving care as well.

Regardless, I had good excuses, and we took off to the perfect Apple Music choice of Ticket to Ride.

Garrett drove, never giving up the driver's seat for the twelve hour trek. I held down the passenger seat with my Rand McNally atlas on my lap alternating with my current read, Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises.

Grandpa Larry entertained his grand-dog, Zeke, in the back seat or the other way around.

With clear blue skies and virtually no wind, we covered four states  today
Atlas always within reach
(Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico) and 810 miles. Zeke was a dream and Larry wasn't too bad either ;)

We celebrated our frugalness with $1 McDonald coffees for breakfast and a fully stocked cooler with healthy food. The goal was to keep us on the road and get to our destination of Santa Fe, New Mexico by dinner time.

Although tired after the drive, we just took in the Downtown district of Santa Fe while providing a needed walk for Zeke. Finding a cute little Mexican restaurant off the beaten path that allowed dogs on their patio, we scored a relaxing meal to close our first night as a traveling squad.

Tomorrow is on to Durango. My Rand McNally tells me we will be seeing some award-winner scenic highways.

We keep reminding each other that the timeline is ours. No reason to hurry. The best kind of road trip. More time with less stress leads to opportunity for the most fun and adventure. And a well-behaved cute puppy sure helps too.
