October 2, 2018: Rain, Rain Go Away

Day 25 | 30 Days of Writing

Notice the clean plates...awesome meal by Aunt Linda (La)

A summary of our day...

Leaving Bishop, CA this morning, we drove into rain as we headed into Yosemite National Park. The temp dipped to a nippy 45 as Garrett weaved us through the park switchbacks. We weren't too keen to get out and get wet. Instead we overwhelmingly enjoyed the sites through the windshield and the warmth of the car.

Midday as we continued north to our final destination of Reno, NV, the home of Garrett's Aunt Linda and Uncle Kenny, the sky broke open with the sun we love. 71 degrees greeted us, along with Linda and Kenny's four dogs, two standard poodles and two corgis. Zeke was thrilled, as were we.

Yosemite was great, but sitting in Kenny and Linda's backyard with the five dogs entertaining each other, as their human counterparts did the same, was pure bliss. Listening to the stories of past family trips and many memories was wonderful. Larry and La (Linda's nickname) have shared so many life experiences. Surprisingly, Garrett remembered many of the trips and pieces of life that they all shared when he was very young.

I just sat back and enjoyed their conversation. I learned about the people in their lives that I have never met and times far before I knew of this family. Stories of Granny and Granddad, June Lake, Yellowstone, fly fishing, and drives on California byways sprinkled through our conversation with wine on the patio. La pampered her weary travelers with an excellent Mississippi pot roast for dinner and peach cobbler for desert (fruit from trees in the backyard), ending our night together.

The US is a great country to tour, but it's the people and conversations as we cover our mapped territory that make this trip spectacular. Some are new to us and others go way back as a piece of our life history.

With each planned destination, our road trip trio converses on the changes in temperature, altitude, gas prices, and landscape. But regardless of the varying terrain, it's the people we visit along the way that make our trip the most memorable.

Although the morning started with unknowns of the day ahead and an outlook of gray skies, the rain did clear for a wonderful burst of a perfect night.
